Grapple Repairs & Line Boring: Restoring Worn Pivot Points
If your grapple is starting to feel loose or inconsistent, worn pivot points could be the culprit.
Like excavator buckets, grapples rely on pins, bushes, and bores working together within tight tolerances. Over time, wear develops in these pivot points, causing movement where there shouldn't be any.
Often, the first time you notice it is as a bit of play in the jaws. You may also notice it when you realise the grapple no longer grabs squarely, holds material properly, or feels as tight as it once did.
The good news is that worn pivot points can often be repaired without replacing the entire attachment.
What Causes Grapple Wear?
Grapples work in tough conditions with dust, dirt, shock loading, and constant movement all contributing to wear over time.
Common causes include:
Worn pins and bushes
Insufficient greasing
Contaminated grease
High operating hours
Shock loads from heavy material handling
Normal wear over years of use
As wear progresses, the bores can become oval rather than remaining round. Once this happens, simply fitting new pins and bushes may not solve the problem.
Signs Your Grapple May Need Repair
If you're seeing any of the following, it's worth having the attachment checked:
Excessive movement in the jaws
Uneven wear on pins or bushes
Rattling or knocking during operation
Difficulty holding material securely
Visible wear around pivot points
Cracks developing around ears or bosses
Why New Pins and Bushes Aren't Always Enough
One of the most common misconceptions is that replacing pins and bushes will remove all the play.
If the bore itself has worn oversize, new components will still have movement because the housing they're fitted into is no longer within specification.
That's where Wilatt’s line boring comes in.
By welding and machining worn bores back to the correct size and alignment, the attachment can be returned to proper working condition.
How Grapple Line Boring Repairs Work
Line boring repairs are used to restore worn pivot points so the attachment can operate as intended. The exact repair method depends on the attachment and the extent of the wear, but the goal remains the same: reduce excessive movement, improve fitment, and extend the useful life of the grapple.
Repair or Replace?
In many cases, repairing a worn grapple is significantly more cost-effective than replacing it.
Where the attachment is otherwise in good condition, line boring and welding repairs can extend its service life and help avoid the cost and downtime associated with replacement and factory part delivery wait times.
